American Bar Association Sports and Entertainment Forum with co-sponsorship by the Beverly Hills Bar Association (BHBA) will present a series of panels at Southwestern Law School on April 12, 2024, on the subject of ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: FRIEND OR FOE?  

The conference will focus on the current boom in Artificial Intelligence in the Sports and Entertainment Issues and the impact on rights of publicity, copyright, and trademark laws. What is the future for creatives in a world where AI can suggest storylines, character arcs, and dialogue and conjure up life size replicas of image and voice? Who will profit from these activities? Who can and should control the use of these artificial devices? What legislative and judicial remedies are available to protect our industries from being upended by this new technology? Is this technology run amuck or just another stepping stone in the evolution of content?  

We shall also address the complex world of ethical restrictions and legal challenges that AI is forcing, both in terms of 1. the new bar rule (Rules of Professional Conduct, Rule 1.1) which imposes “the duty to keep abreast of the changes in the law and its practice, including the benefits and risks associated with relevant technology” and 2. a legal risk analysis that clients face when using or entertaining transactions involving AI. 

We will be joined by preeminent scholars and practitioners on all sides of the spectrum from the creatives (in film, television music gaming, etc.) to the athletes, the Unions, the Studios and the AI companies themselves in a day long exploration of this emerging technology.
